Before making an application for a PCO Licence and becoming part of one of the most exciting companies in the industry, you must ensure that you follow the eligibility criteria. You do not want to end up paying money for your application to be unsuccessful!
You must be 21 and over
If you are under the age of 21, your application will not be taken any further.
Own a UK or European Driving Licence for at least 3 years from the time of application
Similarly, to the above, your application will not be taken further if you have not held a driver’s licence for 3 years or more.
Undergo a DBS check
A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is to look at your criminal record. DBS checks are valid for 3 months and can be renewed via the government website.
Undergo a medical examination
You must also undergo a medical examination to ensure that you are fit to drive. If you are deemed a vulnerable risk due to health, your PCO application will not be progressed. The medical examination is taken by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) which involves completing a TPH/204 Medical Form which will need to be signed by your General Physician (GP).
Pass the Topography Skills Test
Topography is the understanding of how maps work – you will need to know how to get around London! The Topography test is essentially a map reading test that you have to undertake after you have submitted your initial PCO application. The Tfl map-reading test contains sections on traditional map reading along with map applications that you will use on a smartphone. Most importantly, the route planning part of this is the most important part as you will need to know the most efficient way to reach your destination.
The test costs £50 and you will need 60/100 to pass.
Prove you are proficient in the English language
You will need to prove that you have a good level in your English language skills by either taking a Tfl test for English if you are not originally from a country with English as its first language. Additionally, you don’t need to take this test if you have a qualification from an institution that uses English as its form of education.
